In celebration of National Organic Week 2013 (4-13 October), the Centre for Organic Research & Education (CORE) was holding a free event for locals at Cana Communities Farm. The farm opened its gates to host a variety of organic farming workshops including compost, vegie patch and jam making workshops, on Thursday, October 10, from 4pm to 6pm.
Special guest, Costa Georgiadis, host of the TV show Gardening Australia and National Organic Week Ambassador was the highlight of the event bringing his passion and enthusiasm!
Costa spoke to guests about the importance of natural organic food for our health and shared his know-how during the compost and vegie patch workshops.
Cana Farm is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers and donations. It provides opportunities for marginalised people to mix with the wider community and gain valuable training and work experience. More importantly, it gives people a sense of belonging and community.
Cana Farm also offers training in hospitality, horticulture, carpentry and other trades by partnering with Western Sydney TAFE. TAFE students at Cana Farm have very diverse backgrounds – from refugees to former inmates. There are currently 160 students enrolled in Cana Farm courses.
Cana Farm is not certified organic but uses organic farming methods such as recycled mulch supplied by CORE members which would otherwise end up in landfill.
Cana Farm has recently been involved with Gardening Australia LIVE by helping to build the set at this event.
Special thanks to Costa Georgiadis, Julie Sneddon, leader of Cana Farm, all the volunteers who helped prepare the event and everyone who attended. Without you this event wouldn’t have been a success!

Australian Organics Recycling Association (AORA) Awards Dinner
/in Upcoming Events /by Centre for Organic Research and EducationCelebrating and showcasing compost innovation and soil improvement across New South Wales.
The Australian Organics and Recycling Association (AORA) is holding the Annual Compost Awards Night dinner on Friday 5th of July.
AORA works with the New South Wales government to raise awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of recycling organic resources across Australia. In NSW, since 2003, there has been an 80% increase in garden and food waste diverted from landfill and a 13% increase in compost sold over the same period. This equates to more than two million tonnes of organic material being diverted from landfill statewide in 2011.
The AORA Leadership Awards aim to showcase the range of applications, the development of specific products and the ways in which Local Government, landscapers and growers have used compost products to improve soil health. The Minister for Environment, the Hon. Robyn Parker has accepted an invitation from AORA to attend and present the awards. The Minister will recognise outstanding entrants in each category and present a training award of $1,500 to the two winning councils.
